Fearing the Point & Shoot and Social Networking

We have a love hate relationship with our point and shoot camera.

Love: easy to use, light for carrying, always readily available and with it we make fun, memory photos.

Hate: guilt and fear for the results being considered representative of our work.

Can Tiger Woods not play a round of miniature golf for the sake of “fun”? Can Jamie Oliver not heat a can of soup? Can Dan and Janine not make some snapshots?

It was recently brought up that if we post photos to a social networking site for our friends, photos from the point and shoot, photos not technically correct, interesting, or “professionally creative”… we run the risk of having clients see the work and think of us as dolts. I do not want to concern myself with this, does anyone really care?

More importantly, I feel that many photos should be looked at as celebration of what we all do. If someone feels strongly enough to make a photo and share it with others, that moment they captured was special to them, and they care enough to want to show it off.

Perhaps this not only applies to photos, but our characters as well. What we do professionally vs. personally and what we choose to share on Facebook, our blog, or anywhere else “live”. I for one enjoy seeing what our clients are like as people and I hope the same goes for their feelings of us. After 10 years of working for ourselves, we have an impressive list of past & present clients whom we now know as real friends.

I wouldn’t worry about it. I bet all your photos look 100% better than any amateur, and any potential client would probably be more enthusiastic to see that you actually live your profession, than live in a studio.

If you’re REALLY worried about it, you could put a watermark over your professional work, or vice versa.

But I’d love to see more images in the blog posts. I live vicariously :)

Thanks Jonathan, you know I have considered some sort of “fun” watermark, like a beer or smiley face. Just a time factor, but maybe…
