Women’s Adventure Cover and Spreads

We just saw the new Women’s Adventure Magazine for spring 2011. An unusual photo from us is cover along with more work inside as spreads. The cover is unusual only because it is such a tight portrait, not our usual style but one we really enjoy shooting, we are happy to see the new type of usage of our work. Does it work as cover? I think so. And you?

Recent Clips

It is always rewarding to see prominent uses of our work, these are two fun examples. Above is an image we made last fall while visiting the US with Italian friend Kurt Astner. Our two month long climbing road trip was meant to take us back to our roots shooting the same subject matter that was our intro to the world of outdoor industry photography 15 years ago. In the early days we shot climbing, loads of it, and had two covers of Climbing Magazine in the early 2000′s. These were likely our first big clips. Now, 10 years later, we are happy to say we are just as thrilled to see the result of lots of effort get used.

The second use is just plain BIG. Last week was the ISPO Trade Show in Munich, Germany. There, Janine and I charged around the show connecting appointments and continually running into PatitucciPhoto images as booth displays. But none were so big as the Jack Wolfskin panels wrapping their impressive booth. This seems to prove that the Canon 5d can go to at least 5 meters tall.

Paved Magazine Dolomites Cycling

With this clip of recently published work comes an announcement for an exciting new high end road biking publication for America – Paved Magazine. From the publishers of Powder and Bike, and with acclaimed photo editor Dave Reddick at the helm, Paved is going to provide roadies with some quality content much needed in print form. Look for Paved on the news stand, but not online… yet. Their site is in the works, for now it is old school magazine fondling for your tactile pleasure.

A few months back, Dave Reddick came to us seeking Italian Dolomites road biking images for the premier issue of Paved. Of course a high end magazine wants the best of the best to make a good first impression – the Dolomites are just that. We have all the photos to accompany the story, however you’ll have to find the print version to see the rest of our two page spreads – but the opening image, one of our favorites, is a photo Janine made during the 2009 Maratona dles Dolomites. She was shooting the race from a helicopter which touched down on the Passo Giau. Out she jumped and ran through the wide open meadows to a vantage point to really get an overview of how the terrain looks, a snaking road covered with cyclists beneath towering Dolomite buttresses.

Many more of our cycling images from the Dolomites can be seen on our Dolomites Photo Gallery

Trail Runner’s World?

It’s great to see the world’s biggest running publication, Runner’s World, giving trail running the attention it deserves. The September 2010 German issue features our image from last year’s multi-day trail running tour of the Dolomite’s Alta Via 1.

Hopefully there will be a push in this direction – is Trail Running still the fastest growing segment of the outdoor industry…? Based on the number of trail runners we see, and their enthusiasm, it may well be. It’s a relatively inexpensive fitness fix, and there are few feelings as good as being fit to run through the mountains.

Jack Wolfskin Winter Catalog Photoshoot

Even after 12 years of seeing our work published, it is always exciting to see a big job in print, especially when it looks its best thanks to great design. This last week we received the Jack Wolfskin 2011 winter catalog, at nearly 2cm thick it is probably the biggest catalog in the outdoor industry. Jack Wolfskin is an enormous high end German gear manufacturer with a massive presence in Europe. Last winter we were contacted by their advertising agency about doing a sizeable commercial shoot for them in California’s Sierra Nevada. The timing worked out perfectly, plans were made and a short time later we had a pallet (yes, pallet) meet up with us in California. Along with the product came the creative direction – our job was to realistically document a backcountry ski and alpine climbing trip in the Sierra. Our specialty.

The next step, and always the most difficult, was to find the right people to do the project with. We needed three friends with very specific requirements: the right sizes, a high level of skiing ability, alpine climbing skills, fun for the camera, personable, dynamic, and of course the necessary time. In the end, we had the ideal group; David Page, Ben Grasseschi and Brandyn Roark Gray. Together with the stars we had an equally important team of porters to carry all our stuff into the mountains so we could be free to shoot and not deal with logistics.

The Sierra Nevada was at its best for us, abundant blue sky above a very fresh two feet of unusually dry powder. Our location choice was Basin Mountain above Bishop – we nailed the timing, the conditions and the creative. Our models nailed the turns, the fun, the laughing and the friendship. A huge success. A happy client and a very happy group of skiers, porters, and photographers.

Included here is a small sampling of image usage from the alpine climbing segment of the story. Thanks to Jack Wolfskin and all our friends for a great shoot.

Trail Runner and Women’s Adventure Cover Images

As professional photographers, it is especially rewarding to see our images on magazine covers. Here are two current issues from two great clients (and friends) Trail Runner and Women’s Adventure Magazines. Both of these should be  just hitting the newstands now.

We shot this photo of our friends Denice Crall and Matt Holding while on a run along the Poion Spider Mesa Trail in Moab last November

Shot right our door in Brunico, Italy during one of Janine and I's countless trail runs on the endless singletrack of the Val Pusteria

Dolomites Trail Runner Cover

TR_Cover_TreCime

We just returned to the US and found the newest issue of Trail Runner Magazine, November 2009, sporting an image we made in the Dolomites. Patrizia Taibon and Christina Tauber joined us for a run around the Tre Cime di Lavaredo area and wore some of Mountain Hardware’s newest endurance gear for 2010.

In the background are the Tre Cime towers themselves, around which are a network of trails that if done early or late in the day guarantee having the Dolomite’s most famous landmark to yourself.

Smartwool Winter Catalog Clip

Smartwool 2010 Winter Catalog

The 2010 Smartwool winter catalog is out and features our work from last April’s ski touring shoot in Austria’s Silvretta Group. Models/Friend’s extraordinaire Susie Sutphin and Andreas Irsara (a.k.a. TaTa) are featured doing their thing… laughing and skiing.

Smartwool’s creative direction is simple – show the lighter side of whatever subject we are shooting. It has been a welcome challenge for us to produce images for numerous Smartwool catalogs as they require us to change our approach to a shoot. Where we typically focus on the sport itself, Smartwool has us think more about the quirky little things people do during sport. Their branding is successful, one look through their website or catalog reveals a fun, playful and desirable product. We love how they use color, real colors!

And… One big benefit of doing a Smartwool shoot is that I know some new cozy clothes will trickle down to us. Let’s just say that there stuff does NOT stink, in many ways.
