Runner’s World Holland Cover

No matter how many times I get an email with the line, “We’d like to use the attached image as… in our…”, I anxiously scroll down to see what image has been chosen. In our case, it isn’t “just” a photo, it’s a piece of our lives, a memory that is going to be shared and used to hopefully inspire others to get out and have some fun.

Recently, upon receipt of an email from the editor at the Netherlands edition of  Runner’s World, I nearly fell out of my chair when I saw the image selected for the next cover of a trail running special. It’s me, but not only this, it’s from a day in the mountains that Janine and I remember as quite possibly the best we have ever had together. Rewards come in many forms, but none greater then knowing you are living the life you always dreamed of.

Photo of the Day: Sellaronda Ski Race

The 2008 Sellaronda Ski RaceThis week’s selection is meant to be inspiration. Snow is falling, thoughts are turning to skiing and the coming ski rando season is nearly upon us. This photo is from the start line in Corvara, in the Alta Badia.

Last year I did my first races in Italy and had a great time, I also got thoroughly schooled in one of the hardest endurance tests I have ever done. Sci alpinismo, or ski rando racing as it is called in English is massively popular in Europe. The sport combines backcountry skiing with mountain running and alpinism.

One of the biggest races in Italy is the Sellaronda Ski Marathon. Beginning at dusk, the race circumnavigates the Dolomite’s Sella Group using both pistes and service roads – at night!

Participants use powerful headlamps and ultralight ski gear, the climbs are incredibly fast and the descents are on torch lined pistes and typically in full tucks. The sport is 100% full on.

We shot the race in 2008 and it was enough to make me want to try it the following winter. I can confirm; fun, addicting and painful.

Dolomites Trail Runner Cover

TR_Cover_TreCime

We just returned to the US and found the newest issue of Trail Runner Magazine, November 2009, sporting an image we made in the Dolomites. Patrizia Taibon and Christina Tauber joined us for a run around the Tre Cime di Lavaredo area and wore some of Mountain Hardware’s newest endurance gear for 2010.

In the background are the Tre Cime towers themselves, around which are a network of trails that if done early or late in the day guarantee having the Dolomite’s most famous landmark to yourself.

PatitucciPhoto Schedule

Unlike last summer, where we had loads of stories and work photos, this summer has been a bit different. No longer are we just PatitucciPhoto, we are PatitucciPhoto and DolomiteSport – both are thriving, but we are finding out that both, meaning two, means twice the workload. And this year, unlike last, has me bike racing again and training 25 hours a week. Thankfully, my lifelong motto of, “You never remember sleeping in” has been keeping me going, and going, and going.

This summer has seen the beginning of DolomiteSport’s partnership with Holimites grow to now offer running tour packages in the Dolomites. Our first tour was a few weeks back and thanks to our live Twitter feed, our second tour starting next week has a group of Californians arriving for the Alta Via 1. Of course our images from the first Alta Via 1 Tour are posted.

The stories are here, the photos are here – but here is the computer and we are are not “here” so often, rather we are out “there”. In the coming weeks we’ll do our best to get things posted, tell some tales, and show some photos. But first, this week we leave for Zermatt and a commercial shoot, then Chamonix for more of the same, then Iceland… home in mid August.

Stay tuned. And remember, for more sport oriented posts, trip reports and gear reviews, visit DolomiteSport or follow us via the Twitter Feed.

Follow us as we run the Alta Via 1

We will be running/fast packing the Dolomites Alta Via 1 21 – 25 June. Likely to be Italy’s most spectacular trail, the course takes one through the heart of the Italian Dolomites, amongst the most famous peaks and along WWI historical areas.

Throughout the run, we will be Twittering photos, stories and info from the trail and are followable via the Twitter hashtag #dav1.

The DolomiteSport Twitter feed is: http://twitter.com/dolomitesport.

Photos and stories when we are back.

Instant Gratification

PTTiming is everything. Right? Right.

Last night we were out shooting trail running in the Dolomites with our friend Patrizia Taibon. Besides being a great friend, Patrizia has become a star model for us. Her modeling portfolio is beginning to look impressive with numerous magazine covers and ads featuring her. Being both shy and humble, when we show her something new that she is in, she typically replies with a polite smile, then an inquiry as to when we are going for a run, climb or anything else requiring endurance. She is busy, “let’s go!” – she is also a mom.

So, last night while out running, and shooting running, we received an email. Notice that we have the next (and our fifth) cover of the American Backpacker Magazine – featuring Patrizia. The layout pdf came along as well. So there we were, making photos in the Dolomites and looking at a photo of the Dolomites that we made last year for a major US magazine. Perfect timing. Patrizia was all thumbs up. Thanks Patrizia!

All New DolomiteSport.com

First up – a HUGE thank you to the countless people who wrote on the Comment page of the Avalanche post, and especially for some very touching and emotional emails from people who felt comfortable enough to share their stories of loss. We learned a lot from this experience. One friend said it very well though, “Strange how after something like that happens, the world just wakes up and the day starts and life goes on…” This is a fact. Now we’ll take some things along that we’ll never forget.

Onward. After a few days of relaxing at home, Janine and I decided to rebuild our DolomiteSport site to meet the needs required of it – now it will be more like a Blog.

Photos  -  Interaction  -  Fun Stories  -  Trip Reports  -  Gear Reviews, etc…

And we’ll not be the only people involved, others will now be contributing as well. With numerous trips having been booked through our partner’s sites, travel details sent our way, and countless emails of appreciation for the resources we’ve provided, we realize that the site is a huge success. This all makes us tremendously happy.

After only one year online, it is time to grow and take it to a new level. The new site is up and running but still in need of additions. Beta version at DolomiteSport.com There are some known issues we’ll deal with soon. Still learning WordPress. In the coming week there will be all new photos and much new information.

Also, we have a new Twitter feed just for DolomiteSport, you can subscribe at: https://twitter.com/dolomitesport -This will be specific to things we do in the Dolomites. Tomorrow we’ll kick off the new feed with live updates and photos (and humour) from our team training camp. For day 1, we’ll be riding about 200km from home to Lake Garda where we’ll stay for a few days of training. One thing is certain: Duration of the rides+group energy= abundant Italian cuisine photos.

We’d love to hear from you on the new Comment feed as well – we hope you’ll check in.
